Western Saddles: 7 Inspection Tips For Buying Used

When you're looking for a quality western saddle, a used saddle can be a smart choice. The best saddles will last a lifetime with proper care. So, like luxury cars, a quality used saddle can be more aptly described as previously-owned. You can buy a lot more saddle for your money in the used category.

But buying used requires close inspection of the saddle prior to buying. A used saddle is bound to have some wear and some scuffs and scrapes. That's to be expected. What you're really looking for are structural problems. The following are the top 7 used saddle inspection tips.

1. Saddle Tree. The saddle tree is the foundation of a saddle, so if it's not solid nothing else matters. To test the tree, set the saddle on its fork, nose down. Press down hard on the cantle and twist, looking for bending which is an indication of a broken tree. A broken tree is a deal breaker. DO NOT purchase a saddle with a broken tree.

2. Leather Quality. High quality leather will be thick, soft, and supple. It has a much longer life, especially if well cared for. Low quality leather will be thin, often cracked, and will not keep its shape. Avoid buying used saddles with low quality leather. There's no bargain there.

3. Leather Condition. Check whether the jockeys and skirts lie flat or curl up. Curling is a sign of either poor quality leather or leather that is used-up. It's pretty much impossible to get curled leather to lie flat again. If the leather looks to be of good quality (thick, doesn't curl), but looks dried out, a good cleaning and conditioning can do wonders and bring back a lot of its luster.

4. Underside Fleece. Expect to find a good amount of wear and dirt here, but excessive wear may require having the fleece replaced which isn't cheap. Also, uneven wear can be a sign of a badly designed saddle that doesn't fit well and should be avoided.

5. Stitching. Check the stitching to make sure it's intact. Minor problems can be repaired, but a saddle with a lot of rotting and missing stitching should be avoided.

6. Surface. While a quality saddle can last a long time, the care it receives will impact its lifespan and its appearance. Saddles are made to be used and passing on a quality used saddle because of some scratches and scuff marks is a mistake. But, you'll have to determine what you can live with.

7. Parts Inventory. Do a check to see which parts might be missing. Most parts (stirrups, stirrup hobbles, billets, cinches) can be easily replaced (and many will prefer their own choices anyway), but missing parts should factor into the price.

Buying a used saddle can be a very smart choice, IF you carefully inspect the saddle prior to purchase.

Orange Bowl Tickets Are For More Than Just A Football Game

Orange Bowl tickets offer football fans and travelers several options. Not only is the Orange Bowl one of the premier college bowl games every January, but the game itself is located in one of the most exotic travel destinations in the United States - Miami and South Florida. Game History

The first Orange Bowl was played in 1935, when Bucknell defeated Miami 26-0. For 33 years, the Orange Bowl was basically an at-large bowl game, in that the bowl committee chose the best two teams it could attract. However, the Orange Bowl started its history of tie-ins in 1968 when it began to host the champion of the former Big 8 Conference every season.

This tie-in remained in place until the late-1990s, when two things happened that change the landscape of the participants. The first was the formation of the Big 12 Conference, as the Big 8 basically added four teams from Texas after the now-defunct Southwestern Conference folded. This may or may not have had a direct effect on the teams invited, but another event in 1998 led to a shift in the games participants.

In 1998, the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) was formed, and this changed the alignment for all of the major bowl games - the Orange Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl and ultimately the Rose Bowl. A system was put in place to manufacture an on-field championship game between the two top-ranked teams every season, and each of the four new BCS Bowls agreed to host the new national championship game on a rotating basis. Therefore, every four years, Orange Bowl tickets give fans the chance to watch the national championship decided on the field. As of now, when the Orange Bowl is not hosting the big game, they will host the ACC champion after that conferences recent additions.

Miami Dolphins 2006 Schedule

They won the last 6 games of the season and the media is all over themselves for the Miami Dolphins. Is this team really that great? Many analysts seem to think so. The Dolphins finished out the 2005 campaign by rattling off six straight wins against the Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills, San Diego Chargers, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans and New England Patriots. Aging in a Straightjacket? How to Avoid Being Old

I recently asked my newsletter subscribers "What kind of help do you need but are not finding in your quest to put old on hold". One respondent replied, "How to stay young forever."

Facetious answer? Doesn't matter. Let's be honest. Every woman (and probably every man) would like to stay young forever. While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, most would agree that a dry, wrinkled, debilitated face and body is not appealing.

Women want to avoid becoming invisible. Men don't look at an old or older woman, they look beyond her for something more visually appealing. Older women miss being looked at; that's why they work so hard to stay attractive.

But not to worry -- you can stay young forever.

First, let's start with your face. You can buy beauty same as you buy a car on time. Cosmetic procedures of all kinds are becoming easier, safer and more affordable. When you look as good on the outside as you are healthy on the inside, nothing beats the "wow" effect of a successful cosmetic procedure. You are back in the game.

Next, your body reveals what and how much you eat and if you exercise. If you can't control food intake and are not motivated to exercise, you can always find a doctor who will suck fat out every inch of your body.

So much for physical beauty. It's yours if you want it. You can look any way you want to look for as along as you want. You can keep guys gasping in wanton appreciation forever.

But you and I know that staying young forever is not all about looking like a Barbi doll. There is something far more important.

It's about being young inside. It's being 40-50 with "insides" that function like a 25 year old. And the only way you are going to achieve that is by conscientious attention to how you treat your body day in and day out. There is no magic pill. No doctor can do it for you.

Having "young insides" includes having a young attitude. If you can control what goes on in your head, you have it made.

You have to work at having a young attitude because everything in our society militates against it. Once past midlife, tradition dictates that you think, act, dress, walk and talk in socially accepted ways. It's like a straightjacket; the older you get the tighter the straps on the straightjacket squeeze the young attitude out of you.

You have to hold onto a young attitude while you still have one. After it's lost it's tough to get it back.

Once you arrive at seniorhood, a young attitude is severely challenged. You begin to do "senior" things: you go to the senior center with like-minded friends, reminisce about the past, and trade stories about aches, pains and doctors. You go to bingo and the casino and do other socially accepted but stagnating things women your age are supposed to enjoy doing. By the way nothing wrong with bingo and all the rest. It's just "old" behavior. Young people don't do it.

You accept the culturally imposed straightjacket as "this is the way it's supposed to be." With each passing year, the straps on the straightjacket continue to tighten. Your reflection in the mirror gradually becomes that of a squeezed, drained, blank, little old lady.

Here's the antidote: Don't allow your young attitude to be hijacked by outdated cultural norms.

One of the best ways to avoid an old mindset is to choose friends very carefully. If you are 50 and associate primarily with other 50 year olds, you are going to adopt an old attitude before you know it. We learn from each other. We copy each other's behaviors; we adopt each other's thinking.

Even if you are the gutsiest, hippest role model in your group, straightjacket thinking will catch up with you because ultimately, it's easier to fit in than to be different.

I've said it before: To stay young mentally, regular association with young people is a must. But don't wait for them to come to you. Young people hang with other young people. They don't have the maturity to pursue and value older friendships.

If you still work and meet younger people, you are in luck. If you are retired, get a job that puts you in contact with young people. Go back to school or volunteer to mentor young people. I can't stress too much how important this is if you want to maintain a young attitude and outlook on life.

I know from personal experience the value of being around young people. You won't always like what you see or hear; you may be dismayed by some of their ideas and behaviors, but you will benefit from their energy, enthusiasm and openness. It will force you to rethink some of the social straightjacket thinking society foists on people as they progress through stages of aging past midlife.

A bonus: If you maintain a young attitude, and you are looking for a significant other, your chances of catching a "live one" escalate astronomically! Remember, youthfulness attracts youth; "oldness" attracts what is old.

Christmas Discover 3 Inexpensive Ways to Have Family Fun & Create Cherished Christmas Traditions!

Throughout history Christmas has mostly been a time of great celebration and fun. Accept for a short period in the 17th century when Christmas was banned. Today we can draw on celebrations of not only the past but create new ways of celebrating in the modern world where family can come together and enjoy quality and fun time together. Here are some fun and creative ways to celebrate together as a family this coming festive Christmas season without spending a lot of money. 1. Watch Christmas movies together: at the beginning of November get each family member to do some research to come up with 10 Christmas movies they would like to watch during the festive season. Get them to choose 5 modern time movies and 5 old-time movies. Then give each person 1 week to check out the local library, a video shop or do a Google search on the internet for Christmas movies. Once they have their choice write each choice onto a strip of paper and put it into a hat. Each family member takes it in turns to pull out one strip of paper out of the hat and then continue clock-wise for the next person's turn until ten movies have been chosen. Then write each move onto a sheet of paper in the order taken out from the hat and choose one night per week eg. a Saturday evening that all the family come together to watch the Christmas movie and then chat and discuss it after. A great idea is to ask each family member what they thought the message of the movie was for them and how they could incorporate the gift of the message they found in the movie into their Christmas this festive season.

2. Read some Christmas stories together: while time is at a premium in today's busy world reading a short inspirational Christmas story together as a family has many benefits. This is a great way to create some magic and close family time together. Here we can recapture the magic of an old-fashion Christmas. You can go to the local library and pick up an array of wonderful short Christmas story books. Make sure you get a copy of the classic A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens. This is a classic for each Christmas. It is magical for both young and old and will transport you to a magical wonderland. This is quality time shared together that will be remembered loving as a cherished family tradition. This is a really economical way to create festive fun, meaning and togetherness.

3. Make Christmas ornaments together: back in the early days when Christmas ornaments first appeared they were made from hard cookies. This is inexpensive and easy to do and the whole family can be involved and have lots of fun in the process. There are some great Christmas decoration and cookie recipe books available. Go to the library and find some hard cookie recipes such as hard gingerbread. Buy the ingredients and look for some decorations to add such as color for the icing sugar, sprinkles and other cake or festive decorations like mistletoe. Purchase some string or ribbon to thread through the cookie to place on the tree once made. Organize a cooking day with the whole family getting together for around 2-3 hours of focused fun. Get everyone to take it in turns to stir the mixture from east to west 4 times then make a wish, then the next person clockwise takes their turn in stirring the mixture. Make it lots of fun. You are creating magic moments and lasting memories. Once cooked get each person to choose a base color for their icing so that everyone will know it relates to them. Then go ahead and decorate, encourage everyone to be creative and have fun. Lastly once dried, string them and hang them on the tree. Imagine each year the memories and stories of each decoration created by each family member!

Create an exciting and fun time this festive holiday season by adding new traditions to your family activities. As you can see you can do it very cost effectively. Even if you only incorporate one of the above you start the process of creating fun and cherished family memories together. So go ahead and create some wonderful family traditions that you will all cherish, and pass down from one generation to another.
